Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”), is a Japanese healing technique, is based on the principle that one can channel energy, in order to help activate the natural healing processes of the body, to gently assist in helping to relax and restore well-being. It was developed more than 100 years ago by Dr. Mikao Usui, who studied in a Buddhist monastery and had an interest in medicine, psychology, and theology. Dr. Usui had a desire to find a method of healing using the laying on of hands that was unattached to any specific religion or belief so that it could be accessible to everyone.
Brianne Blevins is a practicum supervisor at the Center, mental health clinician and Reiki Master. She became interested in the practice of Reiki as a way to deepen her understanding of the healing process of clients through non-traditional techniques. During a typical Reiki session, one can expect to lie fully clothed in a comfortable position. Brianne will play soft music and help the client to relax. With permission, Brianne will apply soft pressure through hand placements on the body to aid in relaxation and natural healing. Reiki can also be practiced with hovering of hands to ensure comfort of the client. The client is encouraged to breathe deeply and focus on resting throughout the session.
